Say goodbye JEE; Welcome fee-hike

In an important meeting held on Wednesday between IIT Council and officials from HRD Ministry, chaired by Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, it was decided to replace the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to IITs, with a Merit List system that would be formed on basis of a "normalized" Class XII marks combined with the score of a SAT-like test of various aspirants. The proposal to scrap 150 entrance exams for admission into undergraduate courses of all the engineering institutes across the country was also given an affirmative nod in the meeting, which however remains subject to approval of various State governments and the Finance Ministry. In any case, the IITs and NITs, the flagship Central government institutes are to be brought under the purview of this new system from 2013.
However, the proposal for Fee-hike, originally the idea of Anil Kokadkar Committee, was given an approval by Mr.Sibal, by virtue of which the fees of all the students at IITs, excluding those belonging to Non-creamy layer of SC, ST, OBC, will go up from the current 50,000 Rs. to 2 lacs p.a. However, to allay the brunt of this hike on students, it was unanimously agreed upon that the extra 1.5 lacs would be paid by the students only after they are placed in the firms. A relief indeed!
