6.8 Quake rocks Sikkim; tremors in north, east India

An Earthquake with an intensity of 6.8 on the Richter scale on Sunday jolted the northern and eastern parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in Delhi that the quake occured at 6:10 p.m with its epicentre near Sikkim-Nepal border.
The quake was also felt in certain parts of the national capital. TV channels reported death of two persons , other 33 received minor injuries and extensive damage to buildings in Sikkim. The tremor was also felt in various parts of Bihar, people rushed out of their houses and took refuge in open places. Neighbouring Jharkhand also felt the shock , according to a Ranchi report. Panic gripped people in Lucknow and some other parts in U.P.
Immediately after getting the report, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke to Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling and offered him all necessary help. The Prime Minister directed Cabinent Secretary to call an emergency meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority, PMO sources said.

  3. The Natural and man made disaster is going to be a big threat in holistic development. The biggest paradox of the government in disaster response is, the orthodox developmental attitude of the government.

    It's a high time to think and respond, not to talk.
