We had an interesting class with Dr. Kanudeep. She gave us the much needed information about HIV and AIDS.

HIV- Human immunodeficiency virus and AIDS- acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. HIV is a virus whereas AIDS is the disease caused by it.

NACO- it’s a National AIDS Control organisation. It is the biggest organization for formulation of policy and implementation of programs for prevention and control of HIV/AIDS.

AIDS now have become a cause not a disease because of the stigma the people suffering from it face. And there are various NGO’s and societies which are working for it. For eg.SPYM, SAHARA, NRHM and these NGO’s are funded by WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNODC AND Bill and HGF. Then there are societies like SACS’s – State AIDS Control Society. Its Delhi society is called DSACS – Delhi States AIDS Control Society (85 NGO’s) and Punjab’s society is called PSACS. (64 NGO’s).

Most of the NGO’S mainly target

· FSWs – female sex workers / CSWs – Commercial Sex Workers.

· IDU’s – Injecting Drug Users.

· MSM’s – male having sex with male / TG- Transgender.

These NGO’s mentioned above are working with these target people. FSW’s are given free servicer like doctor examination on STD i.e. sexually transmitted diseases, they are provided with free condoms. For IDU’s there is a Needle Syringe Exchanging Programs (NSEP).

For the needle stick injury Post Exposure Prophylaxis(PEP) Drugs are provided at Anti Retroviral Treatment centre (ART). And these drugs are for free.

Remember the AIDS affected people suffer more because of the stigma, so they should be treated well like others.HIV never gets transferred by touching, kissing, using same toilets and sharing food.

. And unsafe sex is not the only reason for getting affected by AIDS. Unusual Pickering of infected injection thrown on roads, transfer of infected blood in hospitals can be the reason for its transfer.

(Not everyone is safe from the HIV and AIDS, it can pick anyone. So you should have a check-up for that.)
