New Delhi: A first-year student of Bachelor in Fine Arts at the Jamia Millia Islamia was beaten to death by four youths outside the university on Tuesday afternoon as scores of people looked on.

At 2.30 pm, Shahrukh Shaheer (19) was attending class when he was called on his mobile by one Sahil, said the police. "As soon as he stepped outside the campus, they caught hold of Shahrukh and thrashed him. One of them was wearing metal knuckle dusters, with which he hit him on his head," said Farhan, a student who tried to save Shahrukh. But the accused beat up Farhan too.

Shahrukh was declared brought dead by doctors at the nearby Holy Family Hospital after which his body was shifted to AIIMS for postmortem.

"The exact motive behind the crime is not known, but the accused were also students of the university and had been rusticated recently. We are working on some leads and have identified some of them," said S K Jain, Additional DCP (South East).

Official sources said there was some enmity between the accused and Shahrukh over personal issues.
But Jamia's media coordinator Simi Malhotra said she did not know about any student being rusticated in the past week. "The incident happened outside the university. The police have not informed us about any students being involved," she added.

"Nobody tried to save my son. I was informed by a faculty member that my son died after he was beaten up by some boys," said Shahrukh's father Shaheer.

Shaheer is a teacher in Jamia School and the family stays at the Jamia teachers' hostel.
Shahrukh's grandfather was an English professor in the university, while his younger brother Aadil also studies in Jamia.

Shaheer said, "I am not aware of Shahrukh having a problem with anyone in the university. He looked cheerful this morning." His friends, who gathered outside the house, were in shock. Neighbourhood friend Zia said, "Only Farhan tried to stop those boys, but he was also beaten up." The university has been closed till Thursday and will now reopen only on October 15 as it is shut for the Games from Friday.
