The Art of Communication-- Saikat Ghosh/Report by-- Himani Tyagi

“The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives”- Anthony Robbins

Communication is an integral part of life. In a span of 24 hours we come in contact with so many people we form a chain of communication with them. It is defined as the exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another; it involves a sender transmitting an idea, information, or feeling to a receiver. Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to transmit.

The session on public communication with Saikat Ghosh (H.O.D OF English department in SGTB KHALSA COLLEGE), focused on communication as a concept as well as the use of language in effective communication. Following are some of the important aspects of communication which were elaborated in the session are:-

The medium of language is important in our communication. We measure language through words.

Human beings need to be sensitive towards language and its’ use.

There is also a psychological dimension to the use of language.

Communication is not a linear process but a simultaneous or circular process.

“There are two types of speaker: those that are nervous & those that are liars”- Mark Twain.

It’s important for an individual to plan the way you are communicating with others, specially when you have to face an audience.

COMMUNICATION CAN MAKE SENSE OR NO SENSE, DEPENDING ON THE LANGUAGE USED.

Rhetoric: the art of public communication.

It simply means how to use language to move human beings. There are three important constituents of this:

LOGOS ( argument & direction)

PATHOS ( emotions)

Ethos ( our thinking & persona)

If one of this one point is missing then rhetoric is incomplete. And the way we can evaluate our communication is by getting feedback. If the audience at large or a person at smaller level is giving you a proper feedback then we can form a perfect communication cycle.

Only the saints and seers can remain silent and communicate through silence and go through life without opening their lips. Even ordinary humans can communicate through silence but only to a certain extent, because in the age of extensive communication it’s not possible for a normal human beings to stop themselves from communication. There is an urge to communicate in fellow-beings. And if we can communicate with good and meaningful language then we can transmit and share knowledge with others.
