End of Qadhafi- Is it a new beginning for Libya?
The uprising that started in February in Libya's Tahrir Square reached its culmination with the horrifying end of its former Dictator Muammar Qadhafi. He was holding the seat of power since the last 42 years.Libya is now under the control of National Transitional Council[NTC] which in itself is a cartel of various groups of differing ideologies.
Although the despotic rule of Qadhafi has finally been eliminated but that does not guarantee the peace in the region.NTC has been supported by North Atlantic Treaty Organization[NATO] and other western nations. It is somewhat similar to what had happened in 1980's during the cold war days. Then in Afghanistan, the anti-communist regime fighting against the Communist inclined Afghan Government was also supported by the USA and its allies. That group later emerged as Taliban and became the biggest threat for USA and subsequently changed all the permutations and combinations of international relations.Right now,NTC has the support of US and its allies. Is it another Taliban in making? The answer can be very anomalous.
Also, the western nations are also eying the rich oil wells of Libya which can be of great help for them during this dwindling time when the US and various other European nations are on the threshold of bankruptcy and are facing the ire of millions of their unemployed and bewildered subjects. This quest of oil in the absence of a strong Central Government can only add to the miseries of the war-torn nation.
Internally too, various lacunaes have been emerged in Libya.Right now the Central Authority in Libya is NTC which in itself is a victim of internal frictions. This can politically destabilise the nation. This political turmoil can hinder the economic growth which will add fuel to the fire.
India too is looking forward for peace in Libya.Prevailing peace in Libya can be of utmost importance as it will ensure the smooth import of Crude Oil to India which will of great relief in this time of galloping inflation.
The Arab insurgency which got started in Tunisia and later spread to other adjoining areas is in a very crucial stage now.Pragmatic approach by the various stakeholders is the demand of the hour.
