More flyovers for Delhi-Time for Makeover!

Given the current chaos on most of Delhi’s roads, especially during peak hours, the government is taking several steps as a part of its initiative to ease the traffic congestion before the Commonwealth Games 2010.

One of the measures being adopted is the construction of many more flyovers to make the roads signal-free. In the past eight years 37 flyovers have been completed with 16 more flyovers and rail over bridges currently under construction. Apart from these another 20 flyovers and overbridges are in the planning stage at the moment.

To make the movement of pedestrians more comfortable, the concept of foot over bridges (FOBs) with escalators was also being introduced with eight such FOBs currently under construction and seven more at the planning stage.

For the first time in Delhi two tunnel corridors have also been planned to facilitate movement of traffic from the Commonwealth Games Village to Nehru Stadium and from the Games Village to Rajiv Chowk.

Special attention was also being given to the construction of a High Capacity Bus System (HCBS), work on which has already started, and completion of Delhi Metro projects especially the link to Gurgaon which is expected to be operational by 2010.
