The Flip Side

  My facebook notifications have been flooding with status updates by almost everybody in my friend list on the Delhi Gang Rape Case(I had to use capital initials because it has become a proper noun now) ever since it came to light. I decided to keep mum(Read "not updating status and not keeping a black dot as my profile picture") because I got really irritated. Firstly, the messages being circulated are fully twisted facts, like "the guy was thrown out first, and later the girl"; whereas the truth is that they were thrown out together. Secondly, all of a sudden, people are providing tons of advices to girls(carry pepper spray, etc.).
   Coming to the point and analyzing the situation, I feel that the girl could have prevented the mishap. In a country where a two-month old baby is bitten and raped, and a 52-year old woman is met with the same fate, how can a girl of 23 even think of getting on a private bus with heavy black curtains after 9 PM in South Delhi? Even the non-Delhiite girls know this fact that it is absolutely dangerous to do so. Auto-rickshaw would have been a safer and more convenient option. Protest Marches, Candle Marches and pleas to make a law to castrate rapists are not gonna help in any way. In fact, if there becomes such a law then rapists will kill girls after raping so that no one ever finds out their sins. Let's face it -- even if she was accompanied by a male friend, the danger of any mishap hadn't vanished. In the recent Bangalore gang rape case also, the victim was with her boyfriend in a car but couldn't get away from getting raped(it should be noted that they parked the car in a jungle).
  My question to all those protesting against this case is: Where were all these 'revolutionaries' when many cases of this kind took place, including the one mentioned above? Renowned film actor and director Farhan Akhtar says in a Delhi Police Campaign advertisement, "Mahilaaon ki suraksha khud unke haath mein hai." The National Women's Commission is always the first body to verbally condemn such inhuman acts and one shouldn't forget that it is comprised of a bunch of women who go to Guwahati for probing the infamous molestation case, wearing fancy hats and laughing and chatting as if they were on a holiday.
  Without any second thoughts, what happened to the girl is beyond any expression of grief and shame. But don't you think that instead of advising women not to step out of their houses after 9, the Honorable Sheila Dikshit should conduct programs for uneducated male teens where they should be taught how to treat women and alternate ways to satisfy their sexual desires in place of shamelessly raping girls? Every mother after hearing of this case would be saying to her daughter, "You'll not go to Delhi for studying." or "Come back home before it gets dark or else we'll appoint a home tutor."; none of them would be telling her son, "If you think of doing any such thing, I'll bury you alive." It's high time to go on the right track and come up with rational measures to ensure the safety of women in the national (rape) capital. It is for the Delhi Police and the Chief Minister to find out such ways or they should die of shame.

And lastly, I suppose I am gonna receive hate messages for posting this.
