To spread awareness about road safety norms and inform people about its various legal provisions, Delhi Transport Department observed a Road Safety Week from 1st to the 7th of January 2007. The theme this year was "Avoid over-speeding and over-loading".
The Department had already put up banners and posters at all major traffic intersections, important roads, offices, commercial and industrial complexes as well as offices of the department and the Delhi Government. It had also engaged groups to perform street plays on the theme at schools, residential localities, and community halls to spread awareness about traffic rules and road safety norms.
As in the past, this year too the emphasis was on educating school children, their parents and school authorities about the precautions to be taken with regard to vehicles ferrying students to and from school. The Transport Department had also brought out a `Do's and Don'ts' for parents containing information about road safety, especially relevant in the wake of the sudden increase in the number of road accidents involving school children.
