CLASS REPORT – 16TH November 2012

We had an intriguing lecture from Mr Soumitra Bose (Head of Content, Digital Media at ESPN STAR Sports). The class was based on facts moreover we discussed that why do we make a website?

Websites have metamorphosed since from their invention, they keep changing their features every now and then but the primary question arises that why these websites are getting more popular now these days. The answer is it gives us instant updated information.  Websites are an ocean of information. Content and interactivity (feedback) are the two most important things in a website which makes it popular.

Content may be divided as:
  1.                                Static
  2.                                Dynamic

We took Delhi university website as an example.
                                                               www.du.ac.in

Static content                                                                                      Dynamic content
-          -Syllabus                                                                                                - Exam Date
-          -VC Message                                                                                         - Results
-          -Courses                                                                                                 - Applications
-           -Staff                                                                                                      - News & Events
-           -Contact Us
-            -Jobs/ Career
  • The content must be Viral i.e.one should frequently share and update his/her content on his/her website.
  •  One should have Archives in his/her website.
Archive- Another important thing in a website which makes us well informed with the news of the past.
  • Nothing works in a website without Advertisements. In TV these are called as SPOTS, in websites-BANNERSand in print- INSERTIONS.

PRE ROLL ADVERTISEMENTS- which comes before streaming of a video on the internet.

Hits – no of people accessing a particular website. The more Hits a website gets the more popularity it gains.

We came to know about some regulatory bodies such as ALEXA, NIELSEN RATINGS, and MIS.

ALEXA- It is one of the regulatory bodies that check, how many unique users have visited a particular website.

NIELSEN RATINGS- it is a worldwide measure which authenticates the highest number of TV viewers.

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (MIS) - another regulatory body which checks that how many times a user has visited a particular advertisement.
We came to know about various stages of broadcasting:

The class ended with a discussion on TRP (Television or Target Rating Point) and we expressed our sincere gratitude to Mr Bose for delivering such an informative lecture.
